Course Description

Embarking on a deep dive into the craft of fiction writing, this course investigates the building blocks of storytelling, including character, dialogue, plot, setting, voice, and theme. These fundamental aspects can lead to stronger writing across all genres of fiction. Acting as a complement to CWRI 1174 (Intro to Creative Writing), this course is tailored for writers who have either studied fiction before or written extensively in the form and wish to take their craft to another level. The learning will be generative (in-class writing and take-home assignments), and students will be provided with the opportunity to share and discuss their work in a safe, nurturing workshop environment. Emphasis will be placed on the short story, though novel writers are welcome.
