Course Description

The Advanced Nursing Foot Care course offered by PED - Education Inc. is the most comprehensive course available for nurses wanting the pursue a career as a foot care nurse. The course provides comprehensive theoretical knowledge in topics ranging from structure and function the foot, abnormal conditions, clients with diabetes, psychosocial behavior and operating a foot care business. This theoretical component is completely online with access to discussions with colleagues and the instructor.

Students will apply theoretical knowledge gained in the online component to complete foot care assessments and conduct foot care services to clients under the supervision of a practicing foot care nurse. The clinical portion of the course will be completed at a local long-term care facility that serves residents of the downtown eastside of Vancouver. This setting is unique to the VCC Foot Care Nursing course, and students will have an opportunity to work with a variety of residents with unique and diverse challenges.

Students must have an active BC nursing license and be in good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

Students should have reliable access to the internet, be able to print documents, and have moderate computer skills.

Learning Resources (textbooks, lab/shop manuals, equipment, etc.): 
All theory learning resources are provided with the learning management system.
Clinical supplies costing approximately $550 are available at the VCC Downtown bookstore prior to campus lab class. Please check the bookstore website at https://downtown.store.vcc.ca/ for textbook information and hours of operation

Instructional Strategies:
The theoretical component is delivered online in an asynchronous manner. Asynchronous learning allows you to learn on your own schedule, within a certain time-frame. Students progress through the content at their own pace and use discussion forums to interact with colleagues and ask questions to the instructor.
The clinical component is delivered through one lab day at the VCC Downtown campus, followed by two full days on site at a local long term care facility under the supervision of a practicing foot care nurse. Students apply theory through assessment and treatment of clients.

Evaluation Plan:
Students must complete the theoretical portion of the course prior to attending the clinical sessions. Students must attend all the clinical hours scheduled and demonstrate competency in foot care nursing skills.
