Course Description

Students are introduced to advanced body mechanics, while continuing to develop and apply the principles of animation. Exercises increase in complexity through believable motion derived from character effort and storytelling.
Assignments help to advance the animator’s awareness of initiating and altering forces through the animated character’s actions. Balance, lead and follow, and timing are the major components of each assignment and used to illustrate a believable physical performance.
Staging or the psychology of composition is explored, with regard to enhancing the visual impact of each shot.
The study of character awareness or thinking time is advanced from previous courses. Animation becomes more believable and entertaining when the audience identifies with the characters that they are watching. Students choose from a list of scenarios for each assignment and devise an entertaining way to animate their choice. The level of complexity increases with each assignment yet remains focused on the core principles of balance, lead and follow, and timing. Creating or finding reference is essential and is supported by lectures on reference analysis and interpretation.
