Course Description

This course focuses on applying industry standard storyboarding techniques to animation assignments and storytelling. Exercises emphasize the development of acting and character animation skills, including techniques to portray a character's thoughts and emotional changes, as well as effective animation lip-sync.
Studying Acting introduces students to performance through body language and timing in the delivery of dialogue and gesture. Character animation students study what an actor goes through to prepare for a role. Acting students are used in reference video recordings, allowing animation students to study internal and external forces related to the emotional and physical components of body movement. Lectures are delivered in the theatre, with demonstrations and discussion exploring visual implications of editing choices, composition, and timing. Storyboarding assignments of increasing complexity are completed throughout the term.
The goal is to tell stories in a clear, understandable, and entertaining way, while exploring creative options for visual delivery. Story brainstorming sessions bring students together to work in a collaborative environment while staying open to receiving and giving input.
