Overview
Geared towards those interested in the field of counselling, this course provides an opportunity to assess interest in, and readiness for, working in the counselling field.
What you will learn
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply basic empathy skills to a client-centred approach
- Apply active listening skills in a helping relationship
- Explore own assumptions, values, biases, and beliefs in the context of helping relationships
- Recognize the effects of interpersonal communication skills in the context of helping relationships
- Identify elements of cultural safety in the context of helping relationships
- Explain and apply professional and ethical practice as it applies to the field of counselling
What to expect
This course introduces students to the basics of the helping relationship. Through lecture, group discussion, role playing, and reflective writing, students will learn about active listening, empathy, cultural safety, ethics, and other aspects of using counselling skills in support work. This course is a prerequisite for the Counselling Skills Foundations: Mental Health and Addictions Certificate. It also can be used as a prerequisite for select Master's of Counselling Psychology programs. The course can be taken online or in-person.
